MCMP-PAT Updater

The Updater is a utility that is shipped with MCMP-PAT.  It automatically retrieves and installs the most updated version of MCMP-PAT with minimal user intervention.  This utility requires that the PC that it is on be connected to the Internet.

Hints:
  • If needed, specify the proxy and port under the Preferences form in MCMP-PAT.  This can be accessed by clicking on Options Preferences.
  • There may be a need to consult with your system administrator or IT person regarding the proxy and port number.
  • Determine the proxy and port number that is being used by looking at the settings of your browser.  In Internet Explorer click on Tools  Internet Options.  Click on the Connections tab, click on the LAN Settings button.  The proxy server and port number will be displayed in the dialog box that will come up.  In Firefox 2.x, click on Tools  Options.  Click on the Advanced tab, click on the Network tab, click the Settings... button under the Connection group.  The proxy and port information will be in the Connection Settings dialog box that will pop up.

Closing MCMP-PAT
Launching the Updater from the Help menu will put the Updater form on top of MCMP-PAT.  The Updater is a different application and it can determine if MCMP-PAT is open.  If an updated version is available for download and MCMP-PAT is open, the Updater will ask the user to close it and will offer an option whether to retry or cancel the operation.

The screenshot below shows the Updater on top of MCMP-PAT.  To close MCMP-PAT click on its "X" or close button.

Possible reasons for the updater to fail:
  • There is no Internet connection.  Check that the network cable is connected and determine if the Internet service provider is having some technical issues.
  • The updater is blocked by the firewall from connecting to the Internet.  Configure the firewall (or ask your system administrator) so that the updater is permitted to connect to the Internet.
  • The proxy and/or port settings are incorrect.  Ask the system administrator for the correct proxy and port number information or determine it by looking at your browser settings.
  • The website where the updated files are located is not available.  Use a browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc) and go to http://www.internetifmc.com/forums to manually check if the site is down.  You'll have to wait until the site is available for the Updater to access the site and download the latest version.
  • User has no write permission to the folder.  The updater will try to overwrite the old files of MCMP-PAT with the newer ones during the update. The IT person needs to give the user who is using the Updater write permission to the folder where MCMP-PAT is installed.

Initialization File
The Updater reads the file Updater.ini if it exists.  The file may or may not contain the proxy and port information.  The first line of the file specifies the proxy name and the second line the port number.  This file is created in the same folder where MCMP-PAT is installed whenever changes are made in the settings from the Preferences form.  If this file does not exist and no command line parameter has been specified, no proxy and port will be used.

Command Parameters
The updater can be forced to use a proxy and port number by specifying the proxy and port number in the command parameter.  The values specified in the command parameters will override the values specified in the initialization file.  Syntax:

Updater [download location] [proxy] [port]

Download location is the Web address where the update files are located.  Default value is "http://www.internetifmc.com/forums/downloads".
Proxy is the proxy location.
Port is the port number.  If not specified, the default value used is 8080.
